Strong Earthquake Rocked Southern Taiwan

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake rocked Taiwan causing injuries to several persons and widespread damage to infrastructure. The relatively strong earthquake disrupted power and communication services in several parts of the country.

Taiwan, China - Some people were reportedly injured as a 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit southern Taiwan Thursday causing major damages to the country's infrastructure. No report of death as of noontime Thursday.

There was no tsunami warning either as of late afternoon. Kuo Kai-wen, director of the Central Weather Bureau's Seismology Center, said the Taiwan quake was not geologically related to the temblor that hit Chile over the weekend, killing more than 800 people.

The quake was centered in the county of Kaohsiung, and struck at a depth of about 3.1 miles (5 kilometers). Kaohsiung is about 249 miles (400 kilometers) south of the capital Taipei.

The Taiwan earthquake came after a radiatively strong quake hit northern Philippines two days ago with a 6.1 magnitude.
